In this way we can offer a complete gemological analysis. This offers a guarantee on the gem and at the same time the parameters for an economic estimate.
A certified gem can be easily evaluated since the certificate objectively describes the characteristics of the stone that constitute the criteria for its classification and listing on the market.
But how to recognize a quality gem?
A limit to the development of knowledge and the culture of gems is that many “expert” traders continue to argue that there are no objective standards of judgment in the evaluation of gems. If there were no objective assessment methods, the customer would have no confidence in the seller and hope that the best choice is what has been proposed to him.
There are instead standard, precise evaluation and classification methods, used in gemmology, that is, the science that studies gems, which derive from mineralogia, geology and optics.
The gemologist is the gemologist, who is the only professional figure competent to certify a precious stone and then releases the Gemmological Certificate, a document attesting to the origin of the stone and providing other data that makes it possible to make an objective judgment.
Over the years, criteria have been developed to objectively judge the beauty of the stones, base notes for diamonds, but extensible to all the other precious stones from the famous “4 C” formula: “color, cut, clarity and carat”, ie COLOR , CUT, PURE AND CHARACTER.
The quality and beauty of a gem is a function of the overall equilibrium between these 4 parameters.
The same formulation of the price of a gem is based on this equilibrium, also in relation to the rarity and market demand of the gem itself.
The gemmological certificate therefore gives the customer a guarantee that the product purchased has an intrinsic and objective value.
What can a gemological laboratory do for me?
Precious stones from the scientific point of view are minerals, that is, they are part of the fundamental components of the earth’s crust and are distinguished by chemical formula, physical and optical properties. Gemmology is the branch of mineralogy studying gems.
The purpose of a gemological laboratory is to identify the buds whether they are natural or synthetic (that is, produced in the lab) and recognize any treatments suffered by the gems themselves, which would depreciate their value. For this identification, gemmologists carry out a laboratory analysis followed by the production of a gemmological certificate, a summary document of the results of all the analyzes made and the description of the observed material.

A simple vendor’s guarantee is often not enough to ensure the purchaser of the fairness of the newly purchased product at its real market price.
The warranty may in fact not contain any description of some of the features that are of utmost importance in determining the actual price of the gem which may be different from the perceived or proposed value of the seller.
A gemological analysis scientifically and objectively describes the characteristics of the gem that constitute the parameters for its classification and listing on the market.
Knowing, for example, that your bud is a ruby is by no means sufficient to establish its value, since the price of a ruby may vary tremendously (from a few euros to the carat, to the thousands of the most valuable specimens) depending on the nature of the gem and the treatments it has suffered. The different types of treatments are hardly recognizable to an inexperienced eye, they are not always durable and are designed to embellish the original material.
Among the features expressed in a gemmological certificate we find the following entries to identify a gem:
Species, mineralogical variety, origin and any treatments.
For example, a ruby: we could identify four cases: 1) natural ruby natural corundum – no treatment 2) corundum ruby natural variety – heat treatment or heating 3) corundum ruby natural variety – thermo-diffusion treatment 4) corundum ruby natural variety – with lead glass 5) corundum synthetic ruby varieties
The first four gems above analyzed by the mineralogical point of view are Rubini, but attention to the differences in the description needs to be taken into account in order to summarize their value: – number 1 is part of the most popular ruby niche, naturally al 100% – the second has undergone the only heating treatment that has now been accepted, which concerns more than 90% of rubies – the price decreases exponentially by no. 3 to n. 5 because thermo diffusion is a first form of gem coloration and lead glass penetrating the stone fractures significantly alters its original appearance; – The fifth element is not natural, it is artificially produced in the laboratory and its value is infinitely lower than that of natural material.
It’s good to be aware of these treatments or even to have a written test, since you might find yourself buying a beautiful artificially colored gem at the same price as a totally natural … and it would not be a good deal!
Taranis .Capital has provided its laboratory with modern research systems: dark field microscopes, refractometers, polaroscopes, spectroscopes and electronic scales for the identification of gems and their qualitative analysis, but above all it has the knowledge, expertise and ‘experience of our gemmologists, constantly updated with new gems that come out on the market and new treatments for their embellishment.
We often find on the market gems subjected to treatments to improve their purity and their final appearance, such as: – Emeralds treated with synthetic resins – Ruby treated with borax – Laser and infiltrating diamonds – Artificially colored opals – New synthetic gems very similar to the natural correspondents.
Only trained and experienced professionals are able to recognize these treatments, utilizing laboratory results and specific tools.
DELIVERY OF GEMS FOR ANALYSIS
To all of our customers, Taranis .Capital offers the ability to analyze their gems. It is possible to go to our laboratory in Valenza (AL) in Italy, and personally deliver the stones to be analyzed, or you can get them by courier.
If you opt for the shipment, you are required to attach to the gem the following signed contract.
It is the Laboratory’s power to accept or not to deliver or to open packages sent by means of a courier whose shell or seals appear tamper-evident or altered.
The return of the analyzed stones or jewelery and the analysis document can be made by direct withdrawal at the Laboratory or by courier service at the expense of the Customer.
